WHERE ARE YOU NOW? PART 1
Please score the following questions for loving on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being “not at all true for me” and 10 being “completely true for me”. Note down your score. Then, when you’ve completed this chapter and implemented my advice, try the questions again.
• I consciously strive to create an environment filled with love every day.
• I treat myself kindly at all times and forgive myself easily when I get things wrong or make mistakes.
• I forgive others easily when I feel hurt by them, and am able to move on with my life and my relationships.
• I am able to embrace all that life presents to me with love and appreciation.
• I feel compassion towards others who have different views to my own.
THE NEED FOR LOVE
When we talk about love and relationships, we often focus on our relationship with the significant other in our life – perhaps a wife, husband or partner. However, what if that significant other were ourselves? Self-love – the ability to show compassion, kindness and forgiveness to ourselves – is the beginning of all love, of all relationships. Because, if we can’t show ourselves love, how can we expect to truly understand how to love others or invite their love into our lives?
The way in which we experience ourselves and relate to others influences all our experience of life – from the joy we may feel for getting up in the morning, to how successful we are at work, to how connected to others we are socially. We wear our life’s experience not only in our hearts, but in our faces and bodies as well. Think about the subtle flickers of emotion that pass across people’s faces in response to a kind or harsh word, or the retelling of an event. When we interact with others, and with ourselves, our experience of those interactions leaves its mark on our physical – and mental – well-being. For example, think of a time when someone has offered you a loving gesture and in doing so has made your heart sing, your shoulders relax and your brain buzz with pride or excitement. It’s as if all the cells in your body respond to the actions and gestures of others.
There’s scientific reason for all this. The scientific study of epigenetics considers how our environment – which doesn’t just mean our living space, but also our lifestyle and experiences – leaves an imprint on our body’s cells. So, for example, the food you eat, the amount of exercise you do, whether you drink alcohol or smoke, and so on, all leave their mark on our cells through tiny genetic expressions – little notches on your genes. These expressions can be passed from one generation to the next, altering our DNA for our children and grandchildren. But it’s not just things we have around, or put into, our body that can affect our cells – our stress levels, levels of relative happiness and our sense of peace are all factors that can influence cellular change, too.
